If you’ve been following me on Instagram or if you’ve seen my Etsy shop, then you’ll probably know that I like to paint pictures of the moon.  I’ve always loved the moon ever since I was a little girl when I used to sit outside in the garden with my dads binoculars and gaze up at the moon and I’d be so amazed at how clearly I could see the craters.  I now can’t see the moon outside without telling my husband and daughter to look at it!  I love to see it and can’t help but gaze at it in wonder. I don’t know why it is, I just find its presence amazingly calming and reassuring, like its alive and its always up there, showing its various phases, not always visible but you know that its there.  It is said that women, especially, are drawn to the moon and its lunar cycles are related to our menstrual cycles.  I don’t know how scientific that is but it makes for interesting reading and I think its helpful to look at our monthly cycles and how it affects us at different times, both our bodies and emotions.  Before I became pregnant, I started to chart my cycles and it helped me to become more in tune with myself and to understand why I was feeling certain ways.

I want to show you some of my moon art work.

This dark moon has been one of my best sellers.  Its a little bit moody but also quite cute.

My blue moon has also been popular, she’s a beautiful mysterious moon, painted earlier this year around the time of the Blue Moon, using different shades of blue watercolour and surrounded by stars.

I often draw ladies and I wanted to paint a lady with the phases of the moon in her hair, I painted this one during the time I first started reading of the lunar cycles and menstrual cycles.  I’m rather fond of this one.  She has a mysterious brooding look about her.

This is another that I painted of the phases of the moon.  I painted a galaxy sky and the moons have simple faces drawn in my quirky style.

I call this one Shadow Moon Cat. I painted this one a few years ago and it remains one of my favourites.  I still have the original and can’t bear to part with it.  I thought that it was a slightly creepy one but then someone said that it reminded them of the lonely feeling that you have in a crowd of people who pretend that they care about you and I completely understood what they meant.  This creature does have a lonely vibe.

This one is called ‘new moon’, although I guess its more of a crescent moon.  A cute, cartoon style bright illustration.

This red moon, painted using watercolour paint, is named Strawberry Moon as it was painted at the time of the full ‘strawberry’ moon in June, named as its the time when strawberries begin to ripen.

And finally, my latest moon, painted today.  Hunters moon, I painted this using gold Kuretake paint and used gold prismacolor pencil to sketch in the details.

All of these moon art works are available to purchase from my Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/LucyTurnerArt
